Travel ban in Iceland – Covid19

Latest Update May 12, 2020

Yes I am sorry to say there is a travel ban in Iceland like in many other countries.

The Icelandic government has implemented the travel restrictions imposed for the Schengen Area and the European Union. As of 20 March 2020, foreign Nationals – except EU/EEA, EFTA or UK nationals – are not allowed to enter Iceland. These restrictions are valid until May 15, 2020.

Please note that as of 24 April 2020, anyone arriving in Iceland must undergo a 14-day quarantine from their day of arrival. This applies equally to Icelanders and foreigners.

The travel ban does not apply for the freight flights.

The Covid-19 Status

Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason has stated that the country has passed the peak of infection. April 23 marked the first day since February without any new confirmed cases of infection.

We are fighting the Corona virus Covid-19 with great success as you can see in the picture below

We have had 1798 infections and 1689 have recovered and 10 people have died.

This is not over yet

Monday, May 4 the restriction will be lifted a little. Kindergarten and primary school will start again. Hairdressers, physical therapists and other personal services will start again. When the ban of mass gatherings will be lifted many restaurants and coffee houses will re-open and the people can start working again.

The tourist industry has collapsed. Over 4000 people have been laid off with 2 – 3 months notice.

Our Hotels, restaurant and the airports are empty. Tourist attractions places are also empty.

Icelandair is struggling like most other airlines around the world but hopefully they will pull through with increase capital and support from our government.

Many of these companies will be closed down and perhaps never open again.

What is next?

Maybe we will be able to lift the travel ban between safe countries in a few months. There is a rumor it might even be sooner.

We think Iceland can be one of the safest countries to travel to when the travel ban will be lifted. We have more space per person than many other countries. We can control how many visitors are at ones in the country.

One thing is for sure. We need to lift this travel ban as soon as it is safe to do so. We need visitors to our country for our economy and the people who have lost their jobs.

The beautiful nature is waiting for you and when you will be able to visit us it will be even more beautiful.

Plan your visit

I urge you to use the time to prepare your visit as well as possible. You would like to use your time here to the fullest and see most of our beautiful nature and enjoy what the country has to offer.

I will continue to add more useful information to my website.
